Watch Your Child’s Reading Performance Soar with Ticket to Read!

 TJ Ticket

We are excited to inform you of your child’s participation in Ticket to Read®, an interactive online reading program designed to strengthen your child’s performance in phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension skills.  Students navigate through a self-paced instructional path, and motivational features such as ticket rewards are issued as students complete certain tasks.  Tickets or tokens can be redeemed to purchase items like toys or items used decorate their clubhouse, or to play games that allow them to practice vocabulary skills.  Students receive constant feedback from the program about their performance, and progress reports are available to teachers to share with you.

Ticket to Read can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection at school, at home, at the library, or in any after-school setting.  Students are issued a User ID and Password from their teacher.

Ticket to Read: Phonics Component consists of 14 instructional paths that target specific phonics skills. The types of activities that students will complete depend on the student’s skill level.  Students can earn Tocket Tokens to redeem in the Toy Shop.  It is recommended for students complete three sessions per week at 15-20 minutes per session.

Ticket to Read: Reading Component consists of 16 levels of reading difficulty spanning levels 1.5 to 7.0 readability.  Passage length and words per minute goals gradually increase with each level.  It is recommended that students complete three sessions per week at 20-30 minutes per session.  A clubhouse status board posts the student’s current level, book, and passage, as well as tickets earned and time spent in the program.

Repeated reading with guided and informed feedback is proven to be an effective practice for improving reading fluency and comprehension.  Ticket to Read offers this opportunity to your child. You may wish to create incentives for your child to participate in Ticket to Read at home.  Setting goals for reading a certain number of passages, earning tickets over a specified time period, increasing words per minute or passing quizzes with 90% or better are suggestions to consider.

Join your child online in Ticket to Read and share the rewards.  Not only will you be involved in your child’s reading development, but you will have a chance to watch his or her reading skills soar.

Meadow Lane will highlight star Ticket-to-Read performers weekly by having their names announced over the school’s intercom, having their picture taken and posted on the Ticket-to-Read Stars Bulletin in the main building, and earning a certificate. Students will also be entered in a drawing to win a free book and small prize at the end of each month.

There are two opportunities to be on the weekly stars’ list. Students who read at least 2 passages per week on the reading component will have a chance at earning one of the top 10 spots on the bulletin. Also, students can earn a spot on the bulletin by collecting the most tokens or tickets in their grade level. In addition, students’ names will be entered in a monthly drawing to win a free book and a small prize!

As the adage says, "it takes a village to be successful." Parent support is important to building reading heroes, so please encourage your child to participate in Ticket to Read at home in addition to their nightly reading! Thank you for your continued support for your child’s reading success!
